Ku-ring-gai has been announced as the joint winner of the 2014 A R Bluett Memorial Award for being the highest achieving urban Council in NSW.
The award was announced at the local government conference in Coffs Harbour by the LGNSW, the peak body for local government in NSW.
Ku-ring-gai Council was judged the joint winner in the Regional and Metropolitan category, along with Bankstown Council.
Cr Jennifer Anderson (mayor for two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2015) said that she was delighted with the award. “We are very pleased that the judges have recognised Ku-ring-gai’s ability to deliver major projects for our community by a combination of good planning, financial acumen and innovation”, she said.
“The new emergency services headquarters, the new Council depot at Pymble, the refit of Gordon Library and construction of the Ku-ring-gai Fitness & Aquatic Centre are just a few of the Council’s major projects in the past two years”.
“Added to that is our strong financial performance and ability to plan for our expanding population through a comprehensive program of land acquisition for public open space”.
Cr Anderson added that the award judges had visited Ku-ring-gai to assess the Council’s submission. “We were able to demonstrate very clearly why Ku-ring-gai would be a worthy winner of this year’s award.”
“The award is testament to the dedication and commitment of the Councillors, General Manager and staff whose diligence, innovation and persistence have enabled us to deliver these outstanding results now recognised at a state level.”
The A R Bluett Memorial Award has been awarded annually since 1945 in memory of Albert Robert Bluett. AR Bluett was an outstanding figure in local government, serving as the Secretary and Solicitor to the Local Government and Shires Associations of NSW for 30 years and one of the architects of the Local Government Act of 1919.
The A R Bluett Memorial Award is keenly contested each year by councils in NSW who would like to be recognised as being the most progressive in the state in all aspects of their operations and services.
