St Ives Village Green - A new recreation precinct

Background

St Ives Village Green is one of Ku-ring-gai Council’s largest parks. The park has been progressively developed to serve the community’s evolving recreational needs and contains several facilities, including a children’s playground and a purpose-built skate facility.

The skate park dates back to 1997 and is now due for an upgrade.

Council is planning a new recreation precinct for the area, in keeping with the St Ives Village Green Landscape Master Plan and Plan of Management.

The new recreation precinct

A final concept design for the new recreation precinct was adopted by Council on 14 June 2016. The final concept was guided by extensive community consultation which provided valuable insights into the use of the area and its proposed facilities.

The design includes a new children’s play space and a skate area, with a central promenade linking facilities with the surrounding park. New paths, seating, shelters, lighting, picnic facilities, shade tree planting and landscaping are also planned, together with improvements to the existing public toilets and the St Ives youth centre.

The adopted design seeks to provide a balanced solution considering the many and varied opinions expressed. It addresses safety and security, access and inclusion, vegetation and planting and the works proposed will improve the overall accessibility, inclusivity, appearance and amenity of the site.

The new precinct provides users with a range of recreational opportunities encouraging interaction of genders, age groups, cultural backgrounds and abilities. The design includes facilities aimed at those who are unable or may choose not to participate in organised sport.
The design emphasis is one of inclusivity and promotes a communal play approach supporting equitable access. The new precinct will provide a range of recreation opportunities with clear graduated challengers for users. 

Key features of the design

  • an inclusive children’s playspace providing junior, adventure, active, social and quiet play experiences suitable for children of varying ages and abilities
  • a flowing, contemporary and challenging new skate bowl and plaza area suitable for a wide range of user types, styles and skill levels
  • an adaptable performance area with raised sloped lawn & multi-directional stage for community events
  • shaded areas and sunny terraces overlooking play and skate areas
  • picnic facilities for children’s parties and family gatherings
  • wide new pathways with accessible links to facilities
  • coloured pavements for visual interest, reduced glare and wayfinding
  • new seating, shelters, bins and bubblers
  • lighting and possible CCTV
  • retention of existing shade trees where possible
  • new shade tree planting and landscaping with clear sight lines for passive surveillance and public safety

Next steps

Staged works have commenced with the relocation of a pedestrian crossing in Village Green Parade to provide safer long term access between the park and accessible car parking. A Development Application has been submitted for a proposed upgrade to the existing Youth Centre and Community Hall, and tender documentation is currently being finalised for an upgrade of the existing amenities building. These building works will improve the overall condition and accessibility of these facilities in support of the new recreation precinct. Documentation is also being finalised for the new inclusive playground and skate facility with site works anticipated to commence in the latter half of 2019, subject to the outcome of Council's mandatory tendering processes.
