All NSW Councils have been requested to implement a program to raise awareness of the need to monitor the safety of awnings over public land.
Awnings are part of the buildings to which they are attached and are the responsibility of the owner of the building, even when an awning is located over a public footpath.
Awnings that are more than 10 years old are more susceptible to failure and should be inspected by a professional engineer for structural adequacy a minimum of every five years.
