A special International Women's Day morning tea was held at Caley's Pavilion in the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden on Wednesday 16 March 2016. Certificates of Appreciation were presented by the Mayor to our "Gems of Ku-ring-gai" - those women who volunteer their time and energy to local organisations, and whose dedication and contribution is recognised by their grateful community.
The speakers, Aileen Mountifield of the Lisa Harnum Foundation and Bianka Costigan of the Tara Costigan Foundation, each had a sobering message about the extent and damage of domestic violence, but were also encouraging and positive about the potential in our community to change the current culture and overcome this socially destructive problem.
We were entertained by the exquisite voice of opera singer Sunyoung Kim and her choir, and by three accomplished dancers from the Swastik Institute of Dance performing beautiful traditional Indian, and lively Bollywood dances.
A delicious morning tea was provided by Ku-ring-gai Meals on Wheels, and the morning concluded with a celebratory 'Gems of Ku-ring-gai 2016' cake and warm congratulations to all our Gems.
The 40 Gems and their contributions are listed in the 'Gems of Ku-ring-gai 2016' booklet (pdf. 1MB).
We thank all of our Gems for making Ku-ring-gai a community we can all enjoy.
