Graduated Licencing Scheme
The NSW Government has changed the Graduated Licencing Scheme (GLS) to help boost the safety and confidence of young drivers.
The GLS prepares novice drivers, especially young drivers to be safe on the road. There are three stages in the GLS including: Learner Driver; Provisional P1; and Provisional P2.
Restrictions, such as lower demerit point thresholds and reduced speed limits, are introduced through each stage of the GLS.
The changes include updating the testing regime, new suspension protocols and extending the ban on mobile phones while driving or riding to include P2 licence holders.
Changes in effect from 1 December 2016
P2 licence holders must not use any function of a mobile phone while driving or riding, or when stationary but not parked. This aligns with the current mobile phone restrictions for L and P1 licence holders.
Additional changes will come into effect from November 2017. Click here for details.
