The Art Centre offers classes for all levels of experience and ability. Our classes are held in light, airy studios providing a stimulating atmosphere in which to work. Considering collage: develop creative processes - New class!

When: Monday
Time: 9am - 12pm

Expand your creative potential in this course that is all about ideas. Examine collage works by well-known Modernist and contemporary artists. Experiment using their techniques as a guide while developing your own style. Stimulate your creativity, compile resources and ideas for future work, and experiment with materials and concepts in friendly and supportive surroundings. You will finish the term with a journal full of ideas, notes and experimentation, and a series of textile/paint/collected item collages. You can use the collages you make as finished works in themselves, or as studies for subsequent paintings, prints or textile pieces.

Drawing essentials

Suitable for beginners and those wishing to improve their drawing skills. Explore drawing media techniques and be guided through the basic principles of drawing: line, tone, perspective and composition. Learn right-brain drawing techniques and discover how to see with an artist's eye. Students will be encouraged to develop their own personal style.

Painting and mixed media workshop

Suitable for artists of all levels who wish to develop their practice. Fundamentals in art making will be covered if needed. Students will be encouraged to work on their projects mentored by Julie. Painting, drawing and mixed media are all welcome.

This course will explore a range of strategies in drawing and painting with reference to historical traditions and how they relate to contemporary practices. The goal is to develop and  consolidate the students’ individual voice. All levels are welcome.

Towards abstraction

This is a class for those who want to take their Art into Abstraction, with a process of learning and experimenting with tools, mediums, methods and techniques - this includes making handmade brushes and tools. Each week students look at different artists via video and images, and their approach to abstraction - inquiring into styles and expressions helping to understand our own visual language. Connecting with emotion, taking risks, trust and intuition are integral to creating abstract art. Integrating drawing throughout and extending into mixed media, inks, watercolour, crayons, acrylics, wax onto paper, canvas and board. The class focusses on the delight of creating, playing and discovery, taking the works of art to a ‘new place’. All the while, enjoying the process and the result whilst increasing our understanding of colour, shape, design, texture, value and line. All welcome - some prior experience in drawing and painting is helpful.

An ideal course for beginners or those wishing to improve their painting and drawing skills. Expressive life drawing and painting

This class covers a wide range of drawing techniques and ideas, focusing on observing the model during short and long poses, as well as the drawing process. Individual tuition encourages development of strong drawing skills and personal style. For beginners to advanced. More advanced students can start to use acrylic or watercolour.

Botanical drawing and painting

This course will explore techniques in drawing and painting and investigate ways the two disciplines can be integrated to develop art works. Exploring drawing - objective to abstract

In this class there is a focus on observation through drawing and is extended using different mediums like charcoal, pencil, crayons, ink, acrylic, paper and canvas, collage and mixed media. By looking at different artists each week, individual styles are explored. Encompassing traditional methods to experimental processes, through to abstraction. Encouraging enjoyment in the process of creating whilst learning about colour, value, line, shape, form, design and composition. Suits all levels of drawing experience.
