Becoming an Australian Citizen is a very special occasion and an important decision that will impact on the rest of your life and the future of your children. It represents the beginning of a new period in a person's life, demonstrating their allegiance to Australia and the Australian way of life.
Ku-ring-gai Council hosts a number of Citizenship Ceremonies a year.
When the Department of Home Affairs have approved your application they will inform you by letter. You must then wait for the Department of Home Affairs to advise Ku-ring-gai Council of the date and time of the ceremony which they have allocated you.
Council will then immediately advise you of the date and time of your ceremony and other relevant information.
If you have been approved but have not received a letter from Council, and you have any enquiries about the date of your ceremony you can call the Citizenship Information Line on 131 880.

Citizenship ceremonies in Ku-ring-gai
Ku-ring-gai Council hosts approximately one citizenship ceremony per month for about 60 to 80 people on a Wednesday evening in the Council Chambers. Recipients must report for seating between 5:30pm and 5:45pm with photo-ID, and the ceremony beginning promptly at 6pm. The Mayor of Ku-ring-gai is the presiding officer.
Ku-ring-gai Council also conducts a larger outdoor ceremony in January on the morning of Australia Day.
Once you have received your letter from Ku-ring-gai Council inviting you to attend a Citizenship Ceremony, please be sure to bring along your letter and a current form of photo identification such as a driver’s licence or passport. Such ID is mandatory and you may be excluded from the ceremony if it is not produced.

How will I know when I should attend a ceremony?
If your citizenship application has been successful, The Department of Home Affairs will write to you well in advance of your ceremony. Later they will allocate you to a ceremony and inform Council. Council will immediately send you a letter advising of the details (date and time etc..) of the citizenship ceremony to be hosted by Ku-ring-gai Council, as well as the paperwork you should bring for identification.
How frequently are ceremonies held at Ku-ring-gai Council?
Ceremonies are held approximately every 4-6 weeks at the Council Chambers, 818 Pacific Highway, Gordon NSW 2072 (with the exception of the Australia Day ceremony which is held outdoors).
What time do ceremonies start and how long do they last for?
With the exception of Australia Day the ceremony commences promptly at 6pm and concludes with light refreshments around 7:15pm. Attendees are required to register by 5:45pm.
Can I bring family or friends to watch?
Yes, you are welcome to bring family and friends along for support. As we have limited seating, we do suggest that a limit of approximately three people per family means everybody should be able to have a seat in order to watch the ceremony. Seating for guests is unreserved and cannot be guaranteed.
Is there an official photographer?
Yes. Council will have a professional photographer at the event and will provide a link for you to download HD images free of charge. However, you and your friends and family are welcome to come forward to take photographs and make video recordings during the proceedings, provided you do not obstruct our photographer.
Parking at the Ku-ring-gai Council Chambers?
There is limited parking for citizenship ceremonies on the evenings they are held. You may park in the few visitor car spaces at the rear of Chambers. After 5pm you may park in the staff car park also at the rear of Chambers. Please note it is illegal to park in spaces designated “Mayor” or “Councillors” and could result in the issue of an infringement notice. Parking spaces are usually available in the Gordon Centre opposite council chambers.
What happens at the end of the Ceremony? Do I have to stay until the very end?
There are complimentary light refreshments provided for everybody at the conclusion of the ceremony, however you are not obliged to stay to the very end. You may leave once you have received your certificate from the Mayor.
What do I have to wear?
Provided it is not offensive, you are at liberty to wear whatever you like to the ceremony. Generally people’s dress may be described as “smart casual”.
Can I bring a holy book if I am swearing an oath?
Yes, you are welcome to bring your own Bible, Koran or other holy book if you wish.
How many people usually receive their citizenship at each ceremony?
The ceremony at Ku-ring-gai Council usually has about 60 to 80 people (including children) receiving their citizenship.
