Nippers on Holiday – Winter Woollens

Nippers in Nature, our Bush Preschool, continues during the holidays with one-off sessions to celebrate what we love about winter. Join us for some good, grubby nature play, stories, creature encounters, bush walking and fun.

Bush Survival Skills

We love being out in the bush, but would you know what to do when something goes wrong? We’ll be learning important survival skills such as bush first aid, how to find fresh water, and constructing an emergency shelter.

Aboriginal Art, Sculpture & Culture

Join renowned indigenous artist Ann Snell for a creative sculpture session using natural materials in the bush. We’ll also learn traditional arts such as weaving and rock painting, and practice our storytelling with symbols and patterns used by artists across the country.

Junior Ranger Apprentices

An opportunity for older children to experience a day in the life of a ranger. High school age students are invited for a work-experience style adventure where you’ll get involved with a variety of ranger tasks. Help plan and run an activity program for little kids, feed and handle captive native animals, and contribute to outdoor projects in our organic garden or fauna enclosures. Two places are available each day so you can bring a friend.

Age: 12-16 years

Cost: $32 supervision fee

Dreaming Stories & Music

Little ones with love meeting our Australian animals and hearing their dreaming stories from across the country. We’ll be making music together with clapsticks, and heading out into the bush to find ochre rocks to make our own paint.

Boomerangs & Bush Tucker

A chance to learn some ancient skills that were central to Australian aboriginal life. Join our rangers on a journey through the bush to identify and sample some bush tucker plants, and have a go at throwing a boomerang – it might even come back!

Campcraft & Wood Fire Cooking

Get back to basics with a day of real Aussie bush skills and cuisine. We’ll learn how to make a fire in challenging conditions, and cook a whole meal including dessert over the coals. You’ll also pick up useful knowledge such as how to make your own camp chair or table.

We do recommend bringing your own lunch just in case! Please advise us of any allergies or intolerances.

Animalia

A whole day in the bush to spend with animals – searching for clues that will help us find creatures out in the wild, and close encounters with some of our favourite reptiles, amphibians and invertebrates.

Big Bushcraft Challenge

Itty Bitty

Shrink yourself to the size of an itty bitty ant and help us explore the world of tiny things in the bush.

Bush Flower Fairies

BushArt Workshop

A special workshop for creative types who love being out in nature. We’ll work together to make a huge collaborative sculpture from bush materials, and get designing with some detailed work involving pattern and shape.

All artists will take home their individual pieces.

Nature Detectives

Are you good at looking for clues and finding hidden things?

In the bush, you’ll find all sorts of clues if you take the time to notice them.

Train your observation skills, visit hidden places, and learn loads of nature facts with our experienced rangers out in the wild.

Important information

The meeting point for our activities is at the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden, 420 Mona Vale Road, St Ives. Please follow signs on your arrival.

  • Children five years and under or with special needs must be accompanied by an adult.
  • All children attending must be within the age range for the activity. This excludes small babies which may accompany a parent free of charge.
  • Most of our activities involve a bush walk on an unpaved track – wear appropriate walking shoes and bring a raincoat if wet!
  • Most Wildflower Garden daytime activities will go ahead in wet weather.  If extreme weather conditions force the cancellation of the activity, participants will be notified by the ranger.
  • All activities within the Wildflower Garden have been risk assessed.
