Mayor's Message - 13 February 2020
Posted at 2:23PM on 14 February 2020
This week our residents are faced with another clean up and disruption to power supplies following last weekend’s extreme weather.
Council staff are working as quickly and as efficiently as possible to assist you; for example, our road maintenance staff were able to repair a landslip at Eastern Arterial Road St Ives within 24 hours of it occurring.
However some issues are beyond our control, particularly in the case of fallen powerlines and interruptions to the power supply. We are working with Ausgrid crews to progressively clear streets so power can be safely reconnected. We are also assisting residents without power through our libraries, which are offering free recharging and computer use and at St Ives Showground, where residents can use the hot showers between 7am and 6pm daily.
We are hoping that things will start returning to normal by this weekend – for regular updates please visit our Facebook page and our website.
Tomorrow on Friday 14 February it is my pleasure to launch the celebrations of 75 years of library services in Ku-ring-gai. I say this with some pride, as Ku-ring-gai was the first Council in NSW to provide a local government library service. We signed the Library Act in 1944 and the next year, a library was set up in the Council Chambers at Gordon.
There have been many milestones in the 75 years since then, such as the introduction of a mobile library service in the 1950s and a free door-to-door service known as the Libraribus. Our libraries have been at the forefront of technological changes too, introducing free wi-fi in 2009 and e-books in 2013. Also in 2013, Gordon Library was completely refurbished with a technology hub and special study areas. This week we will officially launch the new Press Reader facility, which allows library members to access around 7000 newspapers and magazines online free-of-charge.
There are lots of other celebrations planned throughout the year so please check the library web page for updates on events coming up.
