Mayor's message - 1 August 2018

Posted at 11:26AM on 3 August 2018

On Tuesday 7 August we are hosting a very important seminar for older residents on healthcare at the Council Chambers in Gordon. There will be presentations on the Government’s My Health Record proposal to access your medical history, putting together an Advanced Care Plan, how to get the best out of a hospital stay and how to locate the most appropriate after hours medical care. After the presentations there will also be the opportunity to ask questions. The free session is on between 10am and 12.30pm and light refreshments will be served. The Council is currently preparing a plan for how we manage recreation in natural areas. The challenge for us is to provide areas that people can enjoy for their chosen sport while at the same time protecting those places where there are endangered wildlife or plants.

As part of the process we have been meeting with associations and groups representing orienteering, mountain bikers and hikers and others who use our bushland for a variety of activities. I take this opportunity to thank those who have attended meetings with Council staff to express their point of view. The opinions and experiences we have heard will help greatly in preparing the draft plan, which will go on public exhibition later this year.

Shortly we will be advertising for members of a community-based committee to give input on a design for the new Marian Street Theatre. As you may be aware, the Council voted earlier this month to set aside funds in future budgets for an upgraded theatre that can accommodate the performing arts in Ku-ring-gai. The community committee will work with theatre experts and the Council to ensure the theatre is upgraded and managed to a standard that meets community expectations.

A quick mention for the next Sunday Sounds free concert in the Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden this coming Sunday 5 August between 11am and 3pm. Performing this Sunday is singer-songwriter David Taylor with his alternative pop/rock sounds that fans of Ryan Adams, Nick Cave or the Dave Matthews Band will love. Keep the kids entertained with a free live show of native animals. Enjoy wine, coffee, pizza and paella at the Garden while you listen, or bring your own picnic (please note no BYO alcohol).
