Mayor's message - 7 August 2019

At the Council meeting in July, Councillors met to consider the lodgement of the planning proposal for the Lindfield Village Hub. This is one of the most momentous decisions this Council has ever undertaken and the length of the debate reflected the variety of issues being considered by councillors on behalf of our community. A report on the Lindfield Village Hub will again be presented at the August meeting of the Council and the public can speak on the matter at the next Public Forum on 13 August. Click here for details on how to register to speak at a Public Forum.
For the first time, the Council meeting in July was also live streamed to our website. This means that members of the public who are unable to attend monthly Council meetings can now watch the debate on their devices or PCs wherever convenient. The next Council meeting will be from 7pm on Tuesday 20 August, click here if you are interested in tuning in.
One of the challenges facing all Councils is ageing in the community. Ku-ring-gai has a higher than average percentage of people over the age of 80 and as a result, more people in our community are suffering from age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s and dementia. Together with the Ku-ring-gai Neighbourhood Centre, Rotary and the YMCA, the Council is starting up a weekly D Café on Tuesdays from 13 August. The D Café is a support group for people living with dementia and their carers. The group sessions will include coffee and catch up with other members, a light functional exercise program and a guest speaker each week.
Each weekly session will be held at the Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre in West Pymble on Tuesdays between 9.30am and 11.30am. For just the price of a cup of coffee, residents with dementia and their carers will have a supportive and friendly space to call their own each week. Please let your friends and family know about this new service; for more information call the Council’s community services team on 9424 0929 or the Ku-ring-gai Fitness and Aquatic Centre on 9499 2005.
