Mayor's message - 8 October 2019

I am pleased to announce that the Council has received state government approval for new and extended heritage conservation areas in Pymble and Turramurra.
In all, 158 properties will receive additional protection for their heritage status and property owners are being notified this week by letter.
The decision means that Ku-ring-gai’s distinctive streetscape character will be further protected in the future. Property-owners are still able to modify and renovate their properties in heritage conservation areas, keeping in mind changes need to be sympathetic and in character with the area in which they are located.
These new heritage conservation areas are timely in that the Council will shortly begin preparing a Housing Strategy to take account of housing demand over the next two decades. A key factor of the Strategy will be meeting demand for new housing while at the same time respecting the character of Ku-ring-gai which people who live here really love. As the weather starts warming up and daylight saving starts, thoughts turn to spending time outdoors. A new initiative the Council will introduce this month is a Spring Flowers Celebration in Wahroonga. With the support of local businesses, we’ll be planting a colourful display of spring flowers to enliven the centre and welcome the return of warmer weather. If the trial is a success, we propose extending it to other areas in Ku-ring-gai next spring.
The Council will also be hosting two free outdoor events in the coming week. For cyclists riding to work on Wednesday 16 October, we’ll be hosting a free breakfast at Gordon Recreation Reserve in Werona Avenue Gordon between 6.30am and 8am on the day. Ride2Work Day is a national initiative aimed at getting more commuters out of their cars and onto their bikes. Join us for a free cooked breakfast, lots of giveaways and the chance to go into the draw to win a $300 voucher for all your cycling needs.
Next Saturday 19 October sees the return of the very popular Twilight Concert in Wahroonga Park between 5pm and 8pm.
This year we are celebrating the music of Abba with all their hits from the 70s, 80s and 90s.
Bring the family and a picnic rug and enjoy a great evening’s entertainment! Click here for full details.
