Filming in Ku-ring-gai

Ku-ring-gai offers many unique locations for filming including heritage buildings, beautiful parks and gardens and vast tracts of bushland.

General character of Ku-ring-gai

Primarily a residential area, there are numerous homes of quality 20th century architecture, surrounded by established gardens and village shops. Ku-ring-gai's suburbs follow the North Shore railway line and offer good access to significant parks, gardens, bushland and many educational establishments.

Architecture

There are a number of heritage listed homes and buildings including Eryldene Historic House and Garden and Tulkiyan Heritage House. Many large grand estates can still be found intact, with large formal gardens. Some of Sydney's finest streets of inter-war and post war architecture can also be found from 1920 American style bungalows through to the architecture of the 1950s and 1960s.

There is a diverse range of building materials used in the area, from unpainted brick with tile roofs, to early timber houses, rendered walls, timber shingles and iron or slate roofs.

Gardens and parks

A variety of horticultural styles and natural landscapes can be found in Ku-ring-gai, including formal period gardens, some with stonework terraces and steps, carved sandstone ornaments, archways, water fountains and pergolas. There are also large estate private gardens as well as the Council-owned Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden and Swain Gardens.

Many parks contain playground equipment and have bushland pockets or canopy trees. There is a great variety of playing and sport fields, a model flying field, memorial parks and cycle ways.

Bushland

Ku-ring-gai is home to large tracks of bushland featuring tall forests, heath land, sandstone outcrop, ponds, gullies and waterfalls, scenic waterways and tidal wetlands, numerous walking tracks and boardwalks. National Park surrounds the Ku-ring-gai area.

Other

Local railway stations offer examples of early 1900 suburban stations featuring island platform structures, beautiful garden settings, older style ticket offices and signal boxes. The St Ives Showground is predominantly rural in character, featuring equestrian grounds and stables and a variety of other structures including old army buildings.
